Top Twenty Things I Learned at National

Barb

  1. The people I’ve met online are just as awesome in person.
  2. No matter how excited (and surprised) I am that my bag didn’t exceed the weight limit on the flight there, I’m even more excited (and surprised) it didn’t go over on the way back.
  3. Four women can share one small bathroom without killing each other. In fact, it’s kind of the foundation for a solid, lifelong friendship.
  4. Between the keynote speakers and RITA/Golden Heart speeches, you will cry at least once.
  5. Yes, I will pay $20 for a glass of wine (multiple times) even when I’m used to only paying $5 for a bottle at home.
  6. There is always that one workshop that changes my life and makes the entire conference worth the cost.
  7. Being around so many talented authors and creative minds is like giving my muse a Venti iced coffee with a double shot of espresso.
  8. Awards night is the new prom. (Less the date stress and with more $20 wine)Roomies
  9. I really can use 7 pairs of shoes over 4 days.
  10. National is different at different points in my writing career. (Each in its own special, cherished way)
  11. Hotel gift shop souvenirs are perfectly acceptable gifts for children back home. (Psst…they’ll never know the difference)
  12. My recent adds to social media are jam-packed with the most wonderful people.
  13. Cover models aren’t just beautiful, they’re also really personable and don’t mind three Scottish romance authors draping themselves over him. (There will be a video and interview with Harvey coming up this week, so keep an eye out!)
  14. It’s hard to discern people in real life based off the memory of a teeny tiny profile pic from social media.
  15. If I don’t clean my house before I leave for National, I’ll assume every jolt of turbulence means the plane will crash and I will die and someone will see my messy house.
  16. Getting an author you admire to sign your book is exciting, getting an author you know personally and admire to sign your book is awesome.
  17. Volunteering is the best ‘thank you’ you can give the RWA.
  18. Authors are some of the most generous people and willing to selflessly share what they can to help others succeed.
  19. Some workshops are worth standing an hour to listen to.
  20. I’m so going back next year. 2016 San Diego!!

I’m beyond excited to share my gorgeous new cove I’m beyond excited to share my gorgeous new cover for The Last Bookshop in London - a WWII Historical Fiction

The art team at @hanoversquarepress did such a gorgeous job on this cover! I love it so much!!!

Inspired by the true World War II history of the few bookshops to survive the Blitz, The Last Bookshop in London is a timeless story of wartime loss, love and the enduring power of literature.

August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of—and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside.

With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city—after all, she’s never been much of a reader. Overwhelmed with organizing the cluttered store, she doesn’t have time to read the books she sells. But when one is gifted to her, what starts as an obligation becomes a passion that draws her into the incredible world of literature.

As the Blitz rains down bombs on the city night after night, a devastating attack leaves the libraries and shops of London’s literary center in ruins. Miraculously, Grace’s bookshop survives the firestorm. Through blackouts and air raids, Grace continues running the shop, discovering a newfound comfort in the power of words and storytelling that unites her community in ways she never imagined—a force that triumphs over even the darkest nights of war-torn London.
